What is concierge
Each 5* hotel has a CONCIERGE service. The hotel guests can turn to concierge with various requirements and wishes. Concierge is, in most cases, strategically located in the main lobby and is the main communication point between hotel guests and the hotel.
Concierge is described by clients as a person who does everything possible to satisfy the guest's requirements and wishes. Here is a list of a few daily tasks that a concierge must handle:
- Hotel reservations
- Flight tickets reservation and managing any related changes
- Arranging tickets for cultural events
- Incoming and outgoing mail
- Messages to guests
- Arranging transfers and taxi services
- Arranging sightseeing trips, booking of guides
- Restaurant reservations
- Shopping tips
- In other words: anything which is legal and moral
In addition, a concierge must manage all possible and even impossible requirements; however, if the concierge is successful in meeting these requirements, he is usually properly rewarded.
Each concierge builds a network of colleagues and contacts during his career, who often help to simplify his work. As a quote says: "A concierge is as good as his contacts".
History
An interesting description of the word "concierge" is known to the world. It is possible that it comes from the Latin "conservus" or "fellow slave". However, the members of Les Clefs d'Or themselves prefer the derivation from the French name from the days of feudalism "comte des cierges" or "candle guard". These people were best informed about the organization and holding of events in the palaces, and were also responsible for adequate illumination and replacement of extinguished candles. Over time, the "comte de cierges" became responsible for handling all requests and needs they received from the tenants, but also for the kitchen and the preparation of meals for the nobility.
In the Middle Ages, the concierge became a so-called "keeper"- he was in charge of government buildings, castles and châteaux. In Paris, one famous prison was even named „Conciergerie“ in honor of its guards, who guarded the keys and assigned cells to convicts.
At the beginning of the 20th century, international tourism was experiencing a boom, mainly thanks to the rising popularity of the rail and US travel to Europe by ocean liners. At that time, the Swiss hotels, which were among the most renowned in Europe, decided to create a new job: Hall Porter. These first modern-day concierge were responsible for everything from securing horse carriages that were waiting for guests at the train, welcome to the hotel to meeting all requests and wishes during their stay at the hotel.
Over the following years, this trend has spread rapidly across Europe and concierge has become an indispensable part of the services provided to the most demanding clientele.
